Our Expertise

KMAC Consulting Services, a certified Woman Business Enterprise, provides master planning, hydraulic modeling and asset management services for water, wastewater, and reclaimed water utility systems that are tailored to each client's specific needs.
Master Planning

The use of models as tools to assist in water, wastewater, and reclaimed water master planning has become well established. Decisions of vast financial impact are often being made on the basis of model predictions. KMAC Consulting Services will work with you to build / load / calibrate / analyze your model so that you can place well-founded confidence in your model and that implemented schemes will achieve the required performance.

Why prepare a master plan?

  • Growth

  • Safety

  • Fire flows

  • Water quality

  • Public safety

  • System performance

  • Efficiency

  • Regulatory requirements

KMAC Consulting Services can assist you with the various tasks of building a successful master plan:

  • Model development

  • Field test and model calibration

  • Population and growth projections

  • Model requirements

  • Existing system facilities

  • Water quality and treatment

  • Evaluate performance of existing system

  • Evaluate future system requirements

  • Perform model simulation

  • Perform supply / storage analysis

  • Identify system deficiencies

  • Evaluate alternative system improvements

  • Prepare cost estimates for system improvements

  • Capital improvement planning

Hydraulic Modeling

By modeling your system, we will gain a full understanding of its hydraulic behavior. We will use your model as a tool to plan infrastructure improvements, develop operational maintenance strategies and proactively manage your system. A hydraulic model is a mathematical model of a water, wastewater, and reclaimed water system and is used to analyze the system's hydraulic behavior.

KMAC Consulting Services has extensive experience in the entire suite of modeling related services.

Model Building

Although the model represents a simplification of the water, wastewater, and reclaimed water system, KMAC Consulting Services will use detailed and comprehensive data to build the model. Reliable data from various sources will be used such as:

  • Historical data

  • Network and physical data

  • Field data

The objective of model building, the intended use of the model and the required level of accuracy will be discussed with KMAC Consulting Services prior to the model building. It is not unusual to have conflicting records during the construction of the model. It is an ideal opportunity to update your system records (geodatabase).

KMAC Consulting Services can help you to determine your model data requirements. Below are hydraulic network modeling data to be collected for pipes:

  • Internal and external diameter

  • Length

  • Roughness value

  • Connectivity

  • Age

  • Material

  • Lining and year of lining

Field Testing

Field data collection for model calibration is a time-consuming and expensive task. It is therefore important to define a reasonable density of field-testing equipment while maintaining an acceptable level of calibrated model quality and accuracy.

KMAC Consulting Services can assist you in setting up your field test program and determine the optimal location and density.

Model Loading and Allocation

Determining accurate, representative loads and the spatial distribution of load throughout the network model is a key element of modeling. Load data can be derived from many sources including:

  • Flow metering

  • Water consumption records

  • Telemetered system flows

  • Estimates from consumer characteristics (population, land use, and traffic counts)

Using geospatial modeling tools, KMAC Consulting Services will allocate these data as load values at individual nodes within the network model.

Model Calibration

Model calibration will include changes to the parameter values on a trial-and-error basis to achieve an effect which we consider will result in an overall convergence between field and model data.

Network Analysis

Once the model has been validated, KMAC Consulting Services will use it as a means of understanding the system operation under different conditions. KMAC Consulting Services will perform the following network modeling analyses:

  • New pumping or valve arrangements can be tested

  • Several scenarios of demand variation can be analyzed

  • Future growth can be simulated

  • Contingency plans to cope with bursts can be assessed

  • Provide firefighting capabilities to meet land-use requirements

Maintenance

The future accuracy of the model will depend on regular updating, maintenance and even re-calibration to reflect physical changes in the network. The model should be updated to include any changes to the system. Again, KMAC Consulting Services can help you.

Best Modeling Practices

Do not base multi-million dollar decisions on poor modeling.

Development of Modeling Best Practices, Standards, Conventions, and Flags for Models:

KMAC Consulting Services will establish modeling rules to observe when building, analyzing or updating your model. A list of modeling standards, conventions and checks will be developed to provide a framework for the correct execution of modeling tasks and ensure conformity, accuracy, and confidence in your model irrespective of the modeler. KMAC Consulting Services will develop customized modeling standards for all modeling components (physical and non-physical elements) complete with clearly defined rules and advice.

KMAC Consulting Services will develop a comprehensive list of data parameter flags and validation tools. Adopting modeling standards will:

  • Reduce the effort needed for modeling

  • Enhance the accuracy of your model

  • Promote consistency between models

  • Enhance clarity in cases of potential modeling ambiguity or inaccuracy

  • Enhance the aesthetic and professional appearance of your model

  • Provide meaningful modeling data to be used in projects

  • Provide better understanding of your model in case of reuse after a long duration of time

Pressure Managment

A calibrated model can be used to assess the operating pressures and design pressure management schemes. This in turn can:

  • Reduce system leakage

  • Reduce burst incidents

  • Prolong the life of the assets

  • Reduce pressure related demand

By remaining focused on your needs, KMAC Consulting Services creates practical solutions and strategies for effective use of GIS with your models. KMAC Consulting Services' GIS solutions follow industry standards, provide a solid platform for future growth, and are open for integration.

As a consulting firm working on a broad array of projects, KMAC Consulting Services has met many of the challenges which now face utilities integrating GIS programs into their models.
